The Treatment

Therapy for low self esteem aims to decrease the distance between the how the individual views themselves and reality. As the gap decreases the individuals self esteem increases.

After the assessment stage, the therapist helps the client to understand the relationship between their thoughts, feelings and behaviours. After they learn to understand them they are then taught how to challenge these by reprocessing them in a more balanced way.

Once the client and therapist have generated a list of problems and goals they can begin to work on the areas where the individual is having self-doubts. Together they work on the individuals critical judging, punishing behaviours and inability to meet their imposed high expectations or performance. Individuals learn skills on how to stop avoiding the challenges, more effective problem solving skills and chaotic relationships. Lastly individuals learn to break the vicious circle where self-defeating patterns of thinking and behaviour are broken.
